Bianfu Cave Denisovan Bones and Tools Reveal Hunting Life in Yunnan
Allthathistory September 10, 2026Two Nature papers published this week (9–10 September 2026) place the Bianfu Cave Denisovan assemblage among the richest outside Siberia’s Denisova Cave. Rescue excavations in Yunnan Province, southwestern China, recovered three bones—including the first known Denisovan radius (forearm)—plus two skull fragments, four teeth, more than 1,360 stone tools, and roughly 60,000 mammal bone fragments from a limestone cave partly destroyed by quarrying.

Provisional identification: No ancient DNA could be recovered from the Bianfu remains. Researchers instead used paleoproteomics—collagen and related bone/tooth proteins whose amino-acid variants differ among hominin groups—to assign Denisovan identity. Outside experts, including Svante Pääbo (who was not involved), have called the protein evidence the best available and said they are “quite convinced” the fossils are Denisovan, but the attribution remains molecular-protein based rather than genomic and should be treated as strong but provisional pending further work.
Geochronologist Qingfeng Shao (Nanjing Normal University) reports the Denisovan bones date to about 167,000–134,000 years ago, while the cave’s cultural sequence of tools and occupation spans roughly 190,000–70,000 years ago. The site was spotted during vegetation restoration at a former limestone quarry; urgent salvage in 2019 recovered fossils and artefacts before engineering work collapsed much of the entrance and rendered the cave inaccessible, notes archaeologist Bo Li of the University of Wollongong.
Hao Li (Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Beijing) and colleagues argue Bianfu finally links Denisovan fossils to the tools they made and used—scrapers, choppers, hammerstones, flakes from expedient core reduction, and bone tools—rather than leaving technology “orphaned” at mixed or tool-only sites. Pääbo, whose Max Planck lab first sequenced Denisovan DNA in 2010, called the technological insights “wonderful,” saying researchers are “finally getting some direct insights into how they lived.”
Faunal and pollen evidence point to a conifer-dominated forest or forest-steppe setting across Marine Isotope Stages 6 to 4. Cut and percussion marks on deer and water buffalo bones indicate specialized hunting and processing for meat, marrow, and grease. The radius fragment shows a biceps attachment shifted relative to modern humans, suggesting greater force when twisting the forearm palm-up; the skull fragments are thick (about 0.3–0.4 inches), more like archaic Homo and Neanderthals than recent people. Toolmakers often knocked a few sharp flakes, used them, and discarded them—an opportunistic style that may fit plentiful local game in a relatively mild Ice Age refuge on the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau.
Until recently, Denisovans were known mainly from DNA in a Siberian finger bone, scattered teeth and jaws, and last year’s protein-backed identification of the heavy-browed “Dragon Man” skull from northeastern China. Bianfu adds postcranial anatomy and a long cultural sequence in a southern crossroads linking the Tibetan Plateau with East, South, and Southeast Asia—where Denisovan ancestry still appears in many living populations.
